The following symptoms or signs of bowel problems, if unexplained or persistent should be investigated:
- abdominal pain or discomfort related to meals
- a change in bowel habit
- a change in type of bowel motion (stool) – including change in consistency (diarrhoea or constipation) or colour (black motions or bleeding)
- pain in the back passage
- unexplained weight loss
